It’s time to get back into the ring with the release of WWE 2K18, the latest game in the long-running franchise that has entertained fans for nearly 20 years. Utilising the PlayStation 4’s incredible performance capabilities, this promises to be the most fluid and visually impressive title in the series.
The addition of the new MyPLAYER mode introduces new fighting styles for your favourite characters from the world of wrestling, as well as a totally revamped upgrade and progression system. These specific fighting styles can alter the way your wrestler tackles his or her opponent in the ring with different strengths and weaknesses, so it really matters who you choose.
Elsewhere, WWE 2K18 now has a Road to Glory mode that combines with MyPLAYER characters giving gamers the opportunity to compete with others around the world to qualify for a variety of pay-per-view WWE events. When it comes to being in the ring, this is where WWE 2K18 differs from its predecessors the most. With a brand-new graphics engine delivering new lighting modes, increased realism on wrestlers and a completely overhauled camera system, this promises to be the most realistic game in the series.
A new carrying mechanic has also been introduced allowing players to pick up and move their opponents around the ring after starting a grapple. You can then initiate moves such as power bombing to the excitement of the watching crowds. Elsewhere, a new commentary team that stars Michael Cole, Byron Saxton and Corey Graves has been announced. The trio have been in the studio recording since 2016 to ensure that the in-game sound bites feel more like live observations on a match.
WWE reaches new levels of carnage and absolute mayhem with the improvement of eight-person matches. The ladder bouts in which wrestlers compete to reach the top of a ladder, using the item as a weapon in the process, have been overhauled in an effort to make them feel more controlled and fluid. Other match variations include the infamous Royal Rumble and the iconic Battle Royal. Character wise, this is the biggest roster of wrestlers seen in the series. Incorporating 187 of the world’s most iconic stars including Conor McGregor, Alexa Bliss and Apollo Crews to name but a few, WWE 2K18 is aiming to be the definitive experience for fans of the sport. Couple this with the new and improved graphics engine and gamers have a lot to look forward to.
