This third person open world RPG is the sequel to the award-winning Shadow of Mordor, and it continues on from where the last game finished, nicely in-between The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings storylines.
Tailon, who you would have met in the first game is a half dead ranger sharing his body with Celebrimbor, a dark elf spirit who helps him complete quests by giving him mythical powers. The overall mission of the game is to avenge your murdered wife by taking out the dark lord Sauron. But it’s not quite as easy as that, considering he has a huge army and thousands of followers.
In Middle Earth: Shadow of War, not only do you get to take on your enemies in the battlefield, but you can also get them to join your worthy cause, in the battle against Sauron. Once you have pretty much beaten your foe, you can recruit them by using Celebrimbor’s mind controlling power.
Now that they are working for you, you can choose to use them in any battle you like, recruiting more soldiers as you go. After you have enlisted a new fighter, you make the decision whether they will be needed in the next fight. Bruiser orcs are great for battering down gates but they aren’t much use against mortar fire and long-distance snipers – plus, each stronghold has different weak points, defences and occupants.
If one of your recruits impresses you, make sure you reward them – give them that castle as a gift and make them the warden of it. Just be aware that whoever you pick to guard the fort, will literally make it his own. The surroundings and look of the stronghold will quickly change, with new quests related to the leader’s tribe appearing in the surrounding area. Remember to only pick your best warriors to keep guard, as we can guarantee that Sauron’s army will be coming to visit at some point.
The new game mechanics make it possible for your decisions to alter the entire world, so each player will have a different experience. A social conquest mode gives you the chance to buy a variety of upgrades for their forts and then share them online but beware – sharing them with the community puts you at risk of being invaded. During online attacks, the attackers will be able to kill or brand your army, although branded troops won’t be taken back to the attackers Mordor when the fight is over.
If you decide to attack a stronghold, you’ll be given two options – a friendly or ranked fight. A friendly fight will allow you to attack without any risk but ranked games are more dangerous. You’ll be able to improve your assault rating every time you successfully win a conquest and win in-game rewards, but your following can be killed in this mode, so if your captain dies in this, he’s dead for real too.
The Nemesis system is again included in the new release and will be even bigger than its predecessor. This innovative method of enemy design involves putting you against auto-generated bosses who learn from your previous losses – training you to become a mighty warrior with impressive skills.
